This Weekend in College Football: Week 9

As usual, all times Eastern and all predictions wrong.

Noon:

  • Boston College @ Clemson (ABC): Well, Trevor Lawrence is out, so that could work out for Boston College… to maybe cover. Clemson still prevails here.
  • Michigan State @ Michigan (FOX): Well, losing to Rutgers doesn’t inspire a lot of confidence here, but this always feels like a game that’s closer than it should be. But I can’t see a winner other than the Wolverines here.
  • Memphis @ Cincinnati (ESPN): This should be fun, but Cincy should be the winner in the end. May be the game to watch in this timeslot.
  • Kansas State @ West Virginia (ESPN2): I still like K-State here, but I’m not sure why.
  • Iowa State @ Kansas (FS1): Les Miles is at Kansas why exactly? Cyclones all the way here.
  • Coastal Carolina @ Georgia State (ESPNU): Y’all, this could well be the game to watch for the nooner. Seriously. Ranked Coastal! A better than expected Georgia State! I like Coastal but give this a look.
  • Georgia @ Kentucky (SEC): Georgia will presumably score enough to win this one? Maybe? Probably?
  • Purdue @ Illinois (BTN): You could watch Purdue win this, but I’m not sure why.
  • Wake Forest @ Syracuse (ACCN): Wake all day.
  • Texas-San Antonio @ Florida Atlantic (Stadium/RSN): UTSA all day.
  • Temple @ Tulane (ESPN+)

2:00: Central Florida @ Houston (ESPN+): I don’t normally write anything for these stream-onyl games but HOW IS THIS NOT ON TV?!?

3:00:

  • Troy @ Arkansas State (espn3.com)
  • Rice @ Southern Mississippi (espn3.com)

3:30:

  • Notre Dame @ Georgia Tech (ABC): Improvement. That’s all I ask at this point. Measurable progress of any sort.
  • Louisiana State @ Auburn (CBS): Tigers versus Tigers! And no one has any idea how to read this game! Seriously, I have no idea what to expect here. I’ll take LSU I suppose, but I won’t be surprised by either outcome.
  • Northwestern @ Iowa (ESPN): This is certainly a game you could watch that is on at this time. Iowa.
  • Texas Christian @ Baylor (ESPN2): I don’t what TCU is, but I will still take them over Baylor.
  • Indiana @ Rutgers (FS1): These teams are both 1-0! Seriously! I mean, I’ll still take Indiana here but it’s a Big Ten game with intrigue!
  • Alabama-Birmingham @ Louisiana Tech (Stadium/RSN): UAB?

4:00:

  • Texas @ Oklahoma State (FOX): It’s late and I’ve got a headache and there’s a lot of games left. Which is good! That’s what I want out of a college football Saturday! But I need to get this one in the bin. But for this game, man y’all, what’s going at Texas? I guess they have this tendency to play up/down to their opponents, which can definitely serve them well against the Big 12’s last playoff hope in Oklahoma State. I’ll go ahead and take them here to win this and then suffer a disappointing loss later on.
  • Appalachian State @ Louisiana-Monroe (ESPNU): Appy State easy.
  • Mississippi @ Vanderbilt (SEC): Ole Miss for sure. What’s going on in Nashville?
  • Virginia Tech @ Louisville (ACCN): No one expected much from the Cardinals this year, but here they are, looking pretty sharp. I’ll take them over VPI.

6:00: Boise State @ Air Force (CBSS): Boise.

7:00:

  • Mississippi State @ Alabama (ESPN): Bama all day.
  • San Jose State vs. New Mexico (@San Jose, CA; FS1): In a first, this one was moved from Albuquerque to San Jose for COVID reasons. I’ll take the Spartans to win this unexpected home game.
  • Charlotte @ Duke (ACC/RSN): Duke should able to win this one… probably.

7:30:

  • Ohio State @ Pennsylvania State (ABC): Well, Penn State was upset by Indiana last weekend. I don’t think that will have a huge effect here, as most would’ve expected them to lose the Buckeyes anyway.
  • Navy @ Southern Methodist (ESPN2): I’m not sure how good SMU is this year, so Navy probably?
  • Arkansas @ Texas A&M (SEC): Arkansas is better than anyone expected, but A&M’s talent should prevail in the end.
  • Missouri @ Florida (SECA): This game is expected to be lopsided enough in the Gators’ favor that they put it on the alternate y’all.

8:00:

  • Oklahoma @ Texas Tech (FOX): Sooners should be okay in this one.
  • Louisiana @ Texas State (ESPNU): Will the Cajuns keep their preferred moniker for another week? Let’s see! I like them to.
  • North Carolina @ Virginia (ACCN): UNC I guess? I need to watch UVA at some point this year.

9:30: San Diego State @ Utah State (CBSS): Aztecs?

10:15: Western Kentucky @ Brigham Young (ESPN): BYU all the way.

10:30: Nevada @ Nevada-Las Vegas (FS1): A rivalry game, yes, but one that the Wolf Pack should easily win.

This Weekend in College Football: Week 8

As usual, all times Eastern and all predictions wrong.

Noon:

  • Nebraska @ Ohio State (FOX): Whoo boy there’s a lot more games this weekend I wonder… oh hey there Big Ten! Welcome back! Uh, and what better way to say “B1G 1S B4CK!” than… a team that hasn’t been in the conference for a decade getting blown out by the Buckeyes?
  • Oklahoma @ Texas Christian (ABC): Just two two-loss Big 12 teams, tryin’ to find their way. I’ve got OU here.
  • North Carolina State @ North Carolina (ESPN): This is a rivalry, but unlike last week, I don’t think UNC is going to shirk away from this moment.
  • Kansas @ Kansas State (“The Sunflower Showdown”; FS1): Was Kansas supposed to be better this year? I kinda thought they were. But, um, they aren’t.
  • Georgia Southern @ Coastal Carolina (ESPNU): Speaking of teams who’ve beaten Kansas, it’s Coastal Carolina. Ranked, even! And favored here!
  • Auburn @ Mississippi (SEC): It’s extremely worrying if you let South Carolina score 30, whatever the reason. Hard to pick Auburn here.
  • Rutgers @ Michigan State (BTN): Ah, here’s the other way you want to welcome back the Big Ten… a battle of two new coaches! Yeah, that’s right, Schiano is back in New Jersey to restore, uh, an air of competence(?) to Rutgers, and Sparty has finally moved past Dantonio. They might even try to play offense now! Exciting times in East Lansing, where they should be able to get started with a win.
  • Mercer @ Army (CBSS)
  • Syracuse @ Clemson (ACCN): The line on this game is Clemson by 46.5. I don’t think that’s the largest line ever in a conference game, but that’s a lot. And… they’ll probably Cover.
  • Florida State @ Louisville (ACC/RSN): Will FSU’s sudden burst of competence allow them to get past Louisville as well? Sure, why not.
  • Temple @ Memphis (ESPN+)
  • Texas-El Paso @ Charlotte (ESPN+)

1:00: Southern Mississippi @ Liberty (espn3.com)

2:00: Tulane @ Central Florida (ESPN2): Provided they’re not gutted by a extremely close loss to Memphis last week, UCF should just plain out talent Tulane.

2:30: Florida Atlantic @ Marshall (Stadium/RSN)

3:30:

  • Alabama @ Tennessee (CBS): I don’t think it particularly matters which Saturday this month this game occurred, the result would be the same. Normally, I’d say two tough games in a row would wear down any team, but you have to figure Bama is used to getting everyone’s best shot, and I don’t think the Vols can put the kind of pressure on Bama’s “down” defense that Ole Miss a couple weeks ago.
  • Iowa State @ Oklahoma State (FOX): Okahoma State is #6? What? Yeah, uh, they won’t be after this, I reckon.
  • Notre Dame @ Pittsburgh (ABC): I want to see the Pitt Superweapon do its thing as much as anyone else, but as long as they keep playing so conservative as not to win I’m not sure how they will upset anyone.
  • Baylor @ Texas (ESPN): I like Texas here.
  • Pennsylvania State @ Indiana (FS1): So far the best Big Ten game of the day, but it should still be a straightforward Penn State win.
  • Iowa @ Purdue (BTN): I have no idea what to expect, other than Purdue’s best player is out, so probably Iowa?
  • Houston @ Navy (CBSS): Navy’s actually playing football now, whereas Houston hasn’t been. I’ll take the Midshipmen here.
  • Virginia Tech @ Wake Forest (ACC/RSN): I do not understand Virginia Tech right now, but I feel that I should not cross them.
  • Middle Tennessee State @ Rice (espn3.com)

4:00:

  • Georgia State @ Troy (ESPNU): Troy all day here.
  • Kentucky @ Missouri (SEC): I still like Kentucky, at least, I like them to beat Mizzou.
  • Georgia Tech @ Boston College (ACCN): I don’t even know what to say after week. I mean, Clemson is good, but… yeah, that was bad. It’s probably best just to move on.
  • Tennessee-Chattanooga @ Western Kentucky (espn3.com)

5:30: West Virginia @ Texas Tech (ESPN2): Okay, it’s late and I still have work to do. LIGHTNING ROUND! ‘NEERS!

7:00:

  • South Carolina @ Louisiana State (ESPN): LSU!
  • Utah State @ Boise State (FS1): BLUE TURF!
  • Wyoming @ Nevada (CBSS): WYOMING!
  • Louisiana-Monroe @ South Alabama (ESPN+)

7:30:

  • Hawaii @ Fresno State (PPV)
  • Michigan @ Minnesota (ABC): JUG! BACK TO MICHIGAN!
  • Maryland @ Northwestern (BTN): WHY WOULD YOU WATCH THIS ON PURPOSE? NORTHWESTERN I GUESS?

8:00:

  • Louisiana Tech @ Texas-San Antonio (ESPNU): UTSA!
  • Virginia @ Miami (ACCN): MIAMI?

9:00: Cincinnati @ Southern Methodist (ESPN2): Uh, this game is going to be hot, no joke. Watch this one. I like Cincy in the end, mostly because they play defense.

10:15: Texas State @ Brigham Young (ESPN): BYU continues their quest to have their best season since 1984.

10:30:

  • Nevada-Las Vegas @ San Diego State (CBSS): Okay, no Pac-12 After Dark this evening, but next best thing: MOUNTAIN WEST ACTION! I am legitimately looking forward to this. First, I’ll pick the Aztecs.
  • Air Force @ San Jose State (FS1): Unlike San Jose, Air Force has played a game this year, so I’ll take the Falcons.

This Weekend in College Football: Week 7

As usual, all times Eastern and all predictions wrong.

Noon:

  • Kansas @ West Virginia (FOX): Kansas is still awful, hard to see them doing anything here.
  • Clemson @ Georgia Tech (ABC): Well… I mean, look, this is going to, be, uh, tough. Jackets, you’re playing at home with basically house money. Have fun out there.
  • Auburn @ South Carolina (ESPN): I don’t know what will happen here. I think there’s this idea that Muschamp will just sit on you, but I don’t Auburn will be held down.
  • Navy @ East Carolina (ESPN2): Look, y’all, I just watched the Braves blow a lead and lose in a game that could’ve clinched the pennant, so I’m not exactly feeling it right now. I assume Navy can beat these guys though.
  • Texas State @ South Alabama (ESPNU): USA? USA?
  • Kentucky @ Tennessee (SEC): This game should really have retro Jefferson-Pilot graphics because this is Jefferson-Pilot Sports as hell. I think Dave Neal still works for the SEC Network, but that will still make us short of our Dave quotient. At any rate,  Kentucky, I guess?
  • Pittsburgh @ Miami (ACCN): Pitt? Miami? Hell yeah, let’s do this Yinzers.
  • Liberty @ Syracuse (ACC/RSN): Liberty is favored in this game, which is mind-blowing. I have the Orange all the way.
  • South Florida @ Temple (ESPN+)

1:30:

  • Army @ Texas-San Antonio (CBSS): I think this will be a test for UTSA, and I still like Army.
  • Western Kentucky @ Alabama-Birmingham (Stadium/RSN): BLAZERS.

2:30: Louisville @ Notre Dame (NBC): Louisville doesn’t have a chance, but at least Louisville fans have comfortable t-shirts and more from Homefield Apparel!

3:30:

  • Central Florida @ Memphis (ABC): This may well be the game of the week. I mean, I’m going to be watching Game 6 of the NLCS, but you know, I should be able to catch the first quarter. Seriously, this game has been fire the past couple of years and I think that figures to continue. I like Memphis in Memphis though.
  • Mississippi @ Arkansas (SEC): And you’ll want to watch UCF @ Memphis because your alternative is this. I’ll go with Ole Miss.
  • Duke @ North Carolina State (ACC/RSN): I see the 15? 16? years I’ve been doing this have all led up to this point: trying to find anything to say about Duke and NC State. I guess I can say that I think the Wolfpack will win.

4:00:

  • Texas A&M @ Mississippi State (ESPN): Well, let’s see, Miss State has been a trainwreck in the weeks since beating LSU, so I’ll take them here. That’s a thing that makes sense.
  • Massachusetts @ Georgia Southern (ESPN2): UMass has decided to be 2020’s Washington Generals, apparently. Eagles all the way.
  • Virginia @ Wake Forest (ACCN): Maybe I should’ve saved the “Duke-NCSU” thing above for this game. Woof. UVA I guess?

5:00: North Texas @ Middle Tennessee State (Stadium/RSN): Well, I can’t say I recommend watching this game, but if you do, I expect UNT to take it.

6:00: Marshall @ Louisiana Tech (CBSS): This could be interesting. These teams are both off to hot starts but they don’t seem to actually be even. I’ll be interesting to see how it turns out, but I like Marshall on the road.

7:30: North Carolina @ Florida State (ABC): Carolina.

8:00:

  • Georgia @ Alabama (CBS): Welcome to 2020, where even someone who was nominally careful can test positive for COVID. Be careful out there, folks. I think Bama will hold the fort in Tuscaloosa.
  • Boston College @ Virginia Tech (ACCN): Somehow VPI keeps winning, and I expect that trend to continue here.

This Weekend in College Football: Week 6

As usual, all times Eastern and all predictions wrong.

Friday

7:00: Louisville @ Georgia Tech (ESPN): I think all I really have to say about our season so far is that I really hope we start to look at least somewhat improved by December.

Saturday

Noon:

  • Virginia Tech @ North Carolina (ABC): Well, this figures to be Virginia Tech’s toughest test so far, since COVID wasn’t enough to give Duke a chance against them. Carolina figures to have no such issues, though.
  • Texas vs. Oklahoma (“The Red River Shootout” @ Dallas, TX; FOX): Well, at least some things have gone as expected so far in 2020, that particular thing being the continued “not being back”-ness of Texas. That said, they do seem to have a particular “playing up/down to their competition” as I suspected last week, so I still like them over Oklahoma.
  • Florida @ Texas A&M (ESPN): Well, A&M just got pasted by Alabama, so I’m sure the Gators will be the cure for what ails them. Er, wait, no, it’s probably the other thing.
  • Louisiana-Monroe @ Liberty (ESPN2): Liberty figures to be 4-0 after this one.
  • South Carolina @ Vanderbilt (SEC): Speaking of cures for what ails them, Vandy appears to slide onto the schedule at just the right time for the Gamecocks.
  • Missouri vs. Louisiana State (@Columbia, MO): Well, Hurricane Delta forced this to be LSU’s first ever trip to Columbia, despite the Tigers being one of the 4 SEC teams west of the Mississippi (along with LSU) and the fact they’ve been in the SEC for 8 years, but that’s divisional scheduling for you.
  • North Carolina State @ Virginia (ACCN): Well, NC State got surprise win against Pitt last week, which may signal they’re stronger than we thought. UVA, well, we still don’t know a lot about them, but I’m still leaning toward the Cavs here.

12:30: Duke @ Syracuse (ACC/RSN): ‘Cuse? Sure, why not.

1:30: The Citadel @ Army (CBSS)

3:30:

  • Tennessee @ Georgia (CBS): Tennessee is ranked? Sure, um, well, they won’t be after this.
  • Texas Tech @ Iowa State (ABC): Okay, I gotta get up early today for work, and this is going up on Friday because Tech (my Tech, not this Tech) is playing on a Friday. So… LIGHTNING ROUND! Cyclones!
  • Texas-San Antonio @ Brigham Young (ESPN2): Stormin’ Mormons!
  • Central Arkansas @ Arkansas State (espn3.com)
  • Texas State @ Troy (espn3.com)

4:00:

  • Kansas State @ Texas Christian (FOX): TCU?
  • Arkansas @ Auburn (ESPN): Auburn!
  • Middle Tennessee State @ Florida International (ESPNU): FIU!
  • Pittsburgh @ Boston College (ACCN): Pitt took a tumble against NC State last week, but I still like them here.

6:00: Temple @ Navy (CBSS): I thought Navy would get a little better as time went on, but they got straight waxed by Air Force last weekend. What’s going on in Annapolis? It’s going to be Temple’s first game of the year but I find myself liking the Owls here.

7:00: East Carolina @ South Florida (ESPN+)

7:30:

  • Florida State @ Notre Dame (NBC): FSU’s loss to us is continuing to look worse and worse. Irish win easily here.
  • Miami @ Clemson (ABC): Hey, Miami’s in the top 10, eh? DA U IS BACK! Well, uh, not for much longer.
  • Alabama @ Mississippi (ESPN): Naturally, Alabama being “down” this year has already translated into them pasting a decent Texas A&M team 52-24. I think they’re going to be okay.
  • Texas-El Paso @ Louisiana Tech (ESPN2): “This game will go a long way toward to calibrating the middle of the pack in Conference USA”, he thought to himself without a smidge of irony. He continued: “That said, I’m not sure if this game will be that even. SP+ has LT as a two touchdown favorite, so provided the hurricane situation allows this game to be played in Ruston, the Bulldog figure to win.”
  • Mississippi State @ Kentucky (SEC): Mike Leach goes back to the homeland, where Hal Mumme originally brought the Air Raid to Frankfurt in the early 90’s. Naturally, Kentucky runs an offense that’s about as un-Air Raid as you can get. This game figures to be a fun contrast of styles, but Kentucky seems less raw and I like them better.
  • Marshall @ Western Kentucky (Stadium/RSN)

8:00: Charlotte @ North Texas (ESPNU): Miami-Clemson and Miss State-Kentucky will probably have you (well, me at least) flipping between channels. They’re going to be tense and exciting (hopefully), so you may need a come down afterward. Well, boy howdy, do I have the Sun Belt game for you! (Read: man do I miss Pac-12 After dark.) Anyway, I like UNT here.

This Weekend in College Football: Week 5

As usual, all times Eastern and all predictions wrong.

Noon:

  • Baylor @ West Virginia (ABC): You can watch this game, but this is a 3rd-tier Big 12 game at this point. I’ll take the ‘Neers and otherwise avoid this one like the plague.
  • Texas Christian @ Texas (FOX): Hey Texas, how’s that season of being back going? Ah, overtime with Texas Tech you say? Well, fortunately you get… okay this one should be pretty tough as well, but you should win.
  • South Carolina @ Florida (ESPN): Florida figures to win this in possibly the most hilarious and/or stressful way possible, which should make for a good time when you’re catching up on your Twitter timeline.
  • Arkansas State @ Coastal Carolina (ESPN2): I have no idea in this one. Redwolves?
  • East Carolina @ Georgia State (ESPNU): I’m assuming both of these teams are awful, but I guess I’ll guess ECU?
  • Missouri @ Tennessee (SEC): Tennessee, just so I don’t have to think about this one too hard.
  • North Carolina State @ Pittsburgh (ACCN): Pitt.

12:30: Texas-San Antonio @ Alabama-Birmingham (Stadium/RSN): UTSA is possibly one of the worst teams in college football this year, UAB should win easily.

3:30:

  • Texas A&M @ Alabama (CBS): Bama may well be “down” this year, but that seems like a strictly relative term. I’ve got them here.
  • North Carolina @ Boston College (ABC): BC is improved, but probably not improved enough to prevail over UNC. This could be a good game though,
  • Oklahoma State @ Kansas (ESPN): This won’t, OSU all the way.
  • Memphis @ Southern Methodist (ESPN2): This one may be the “hidden” gem of the 3:30 timeslot. It should be a proper barnburner, but I have Memphis coming out ahead in the end. By which I mean “I hope they have the last possession”.
  • Texas Tech @ Kansas State (FS1): Texas Tech tries to show that they’re real, but I suspect I Texas played down to their level as much as anything else and that K-State won’t have much of an issue here.
  • South Florida @ Cincinnati (ESPN+)

4:00:

  • Charlotte @ Florida Atlantic (ESPNU): I had to remember that Lane Kiffin has taken his show to Oxford (Mississippi) so the Owls are no longer also known as the Fightin’ Kiffins. Alas. At any rate, I still like FAU here.
  • Mississippi @ Kentucky (SEC): Speaking of Kiffin, he’ll get the pleasure of losing to Kentucky. It’s like a death from a thousand cuts. Have fun!
  • Virginia Tech @ Duke (ACCN): Duke? Sure.

5:00: Western Kentucky @ Middle Tennessee State (espn3.com)

6:00: Navy @ Air Force (CBSS):

7:00: Georgia Southern @ Louisiana-Monroe (ESPN+)

7:30:

  • Auburn @ Georgia (“The Deep South’s Oldest Rivalry”; ESPN): Hoo boy. The first real “hype” game of the year. Georgia’s offense is moribund and boring, but when has that not been the case? I’m hoping Auburn wins, but I’m guessing Georgia will prevail.
  • Tulsa @ Central Florida (ESPN2): UCF figures to continue their dominance.
  • Louisiana State @ Vanderbilt (SEC): LSU figures to have no issues with Vandy.
  • Arkansas @ Mississippi State (SECA): The blowouts continue, as Arkansas is… bad.
  • Southern Mississippi @ North Texas (Stadium/RSN):  Still truckin’ through these bad teams. USM seems to be inspired by their interim coach, let’s go with them.

8:00: Virginia @ Clemson (ACCN): And finally the blowouts conclude. I haven’t a reason to pay for a streaming service to get ACC Network yet, and that will continue for at least two more weeks! (Essentially, until Georgia Tech plays on the network.)
