Bowl Games 2023: Get Out the Nog

I got off to a pretty good start in bowl season, but things very much hit the skids last Saturday. You can see how I’m doing here. With that, let’s dive right into the next batch.

As usual, all times Eastern and all predictions wrong.

Tuesday, December 26

2:00: Minnesota vs. Bowling Green (Quick Lane Bowl @ Detroit, MI; ESPN): This one is tough for me to predict. I don’t think either of these teams is good exactly, though it’s at least somewhat gratifying that the MAC team we lost to this year is in a bowl game. Somehow I don’t think they’re going to be able to pull the “beating a P5 twice” trick.
SP+ line: Gophers -4.7
Vegas line: Gophers -3.5
Watchability tier: I
Previous meetings: In 1986, the Gophers won 31-7. Their most recent meeting went the other way, with the Falcons pipping the Gophers 14-10. Overall, the series is even at 2-2.
Last bowl game: This will be the Gopher’s third bowl in a row. In 2021, they beat WVU 18-6 into the Guaranteed Rate Bowl, and last season they beat Syracuse 28-20 in the Pinstripe Bowl. Last season, Bowling Green lost 24-19 to New Mexico State in this very game.
Announcers: Connor Onion, Dustin Fox, and Tori Petry

5:30: Texas State vs. Rice (First Responder Bowl @ Dallas, TX; ESPN): First off, shout out to the Bobcats for making the first bowl game in school history. Not only that, they’ve got a matchup they can be pretty competitive in, to the point where I think they’ll also get the first bowl win in school history.
SP+ line: TSU -4.2
Vegas line: TSU -4
Watchability tier: I
Previous meetings: This is the first FBS meeting between these two teams, though the overall series is 2-2.
Last bowl game: This is the first ever FBS bowl game for the Bobcats. The Owls lost 38-24 to Southern Miss in the Lending Tree Bowl.
Announcers: Dave Neal, Aaron Murray, and Morgan Uber

9:00: Nevada-Las Vegas vs. Kansas (Guaranteed Rate Bowl @ Phoenix, AZ; ESPN): This game could go a couple of ways. Kansas could just come out and whip a demoralized UNLV squad that lost to the most mid Boise State team in years in their last game. Or UNLV will remember that they got here by running a fun offense, and this thing is just a wide open shootout that keeps those of us on the East Coast up too late. While I have the former scenario as my official prediction, I’m secretly hoping for the latter.
SP+ line: KU -7.3
Vegas line: KU -12.5
Watchability tier: III
Previous meetings: Just two. UNLV won the first in 2002 31-20, and Kansas won 46-24 in 2003.
Last bowl game: This is the first bowl game for UNLV since a 36-14 loss to North Texas in the 2013-14 Heart of Dallas Bowl. The Jayhawks lost last season’s absolute banger of a Liberty Bowl 55-53 to Arkansas.
Announcers: Beth Mowins, Kirk Morrison, and Stormy Buonantony

Wednesday, December 27

2:00: Virginia Tech vs. Tulane (Military Bowl @ Annapolis, MD; ESPN): It was a year that exceeded all expectations in Blacksburg, with the Hokies getting back to a bowl. The Green Wave had a chance to repeat last season’s rousing success, but it turns out they just weren’t as good as the team that won the Sugar Bowl last season. Regardless, I think they will be able to hang with the Hokies, and more than that, win. This could be a fun one.
SP+ line: VPI -0.6
Vegas line: VPI -7.5
Watchability tier: III
Previous meetings: Nine overall, but it’s been a while. The first was a 21-14 Tulane victory in 1956, and the last was a 30-13 Hokies win in 1989. The Hokies hold a 5-4 lead in the series.
Last bowl game: The Green Wave beat USC in last season’s Cotton Bowl 46-45. Virginia Tech’s last postseason appearance was the 2021 Pinstripe Bowl, where they lost 54-10 to Maryland.
Announcers: Jay Alter, Rene Ingoglia, and Alex Chappell

5:30: North Carolina vs. West Virginia (Mayo Bowl @ Charlotte, NC; ESPN): The mayonnaise dunk after the game generally draws a decidedly mixed reaction, though at least no one will probably get as done bad as Shane Beamer a few years ago (when the cooler containing the mayo bonked him on the head). Either way, you’ve got a UNC team that once again failed to meet expectations versus a WVU team that absolutely smashed them. And that’s definitely reflected in the lines below, with the computer still favoring UNC and the folks in the desert favoring the ‘Neers. Well, as for myself, I think Carolina still just has too much talent.
SP+ line: Heels -4.8
Vegas line: Neers -5.5
Watchability tier: II
Previous meetings: Only twice, and both in bowl games. Carolina won 20-13 in the 1996-97 Gator Bowl, and the ‘Neers got their revenge with a 31-30 win in the 2008 Car Care Bowl.
Last bowl game: This is UNC’s fifth straight bowl game, dating to a 55-13 win over Temple in the 2019 Military Bowl. Last season they lost 28-27 to Oregon in the Holiday Bowl. WVU last made a bowl in 2021, where they lost 18-6 to Minnesota in the Guaranteed Rate Bowl.
Announcers: Matt Barrie, Dan Mullen, and Harry Lyles Jr.

8:00: Louisville vs. Southern California (Holiday Bowl @ San Diego, CA; FOX): Picking bowl games is sometimes an an entirely vibes-based enterprise, as the kids might say. And no game personifies that more than this one. I cannot imagine USC having any motivation in this one. And their defense has been awful enough all season to allow even the Cardinals reduced offense to move the ball. This could get bad.
SP+ line: Cards -2.9
Vegas line: Cards -7.5
Watchability tier: II
Previous meetings: This is the first meeting between these teams.
Last bowl game: This is the Cardinals’s third straight bowl appearance, dating to the 2021 First Responder Bowl, where they lost 31-28 to Air Force. Last season they beat Cincinnati 24-7 in the Fenway Bowl. USC lost last seasons Cotton Bowl to Tulane, 46-45.
Announcers: Gus Johnson, Joel Klatt, and Jenny Taft

9:00: Oklahoma State vs. Texas A&M (Texas Bowl @ Houston, TX; ESPN): I had no idea how to read this one: in the games the Aggies did play after firing Jimbo the offense did seem to work better, and the Pokes being frauds more-or-less got exposed in their last three games. That said, I didn’t really trust SP+ on this one and only picked TAMU by three. Hopefully, this confusion will result in an interesting game.
SP+ line: Aggies -9.5
Vegas line: Aggies -3
Watchability tier: II
Previous meetings: 28 overall, bolstered by their mutual time in the Big 12. The first though was a 3-0 Cowboys win in 1913. The last was a 24-21 Aggies win in the 2019 Texas Bowl. In between, the Aggies have compiled a 18-10 record.
Last bowl game: The Pokes have one of the longest bowl streaks in the country, with 18 straight bowl season appearances. The streak started with the 2006 Independence Bowl, where Oklahoma State won 34-31 over Alabama. Last season they lost 24-17 to Wisconsin in the Guaranteed Rate Bowl. TAMU was supposed to play in the Gator Bowl in 2021, but they didn’t, so their last postseason appearance a 41-27 win over UNC in the 2020-21 Orange Bowl.
Announcers: Roy Philpott, Roddy Jones, and Taylor McGregor

Thursday, December 28

11:00: Boston College vs. Southern Methodist (Fenway Bowl @ Boston, MA; ESPN): SMU figures to pick up their first ACC conference win a little early in this one.
SP+ line: Ponies -15.4
Vegas line: Pones -10.5
Watchability tier: II
Previous meetings: Just one: a 31-29 SMU win in 1986.
Last bowl game: BC hasn’t made a bowl since a 38-6 loss to Cincinnati in the 2019-20 Birmingham Bowl. SMU made a bowl game in 2019, losing to FAU 52-28 in the Boca Raton Bowl. They opted out in 2020 and their 2021 appearance in the Fenway Bowl was canceled, so they were last seen in December losing 24-23 to BYU in last season’s New Mexico Bowl.
Announcers: Chris Cotter, Mark Herzlich, and Sherree Burruss

2:15: Miami vs. Rutgers (Pinstripe Bowl @ New York, NY; ESPN): If having another game in the northeast makes you hope for a good game, well, it might be raining during the Fenway Bowl, but it seems like it might just be cold for this one. Alas. Either way, Miami should win this one, but that’s never stopped them before.
SP+ line: Canes -9.4
Vegas line: Canes -1.5
Watchability tier: II
Previous meetings: This is a Big East-tastic matchup. As one might guess, the Canes have a pretty good record in this series, and in fact, it’s a perfect 11-0. The first was a 31-17 Miami win in 1993, and the last was a 34-10 Canes win in 2003.
Last bowl game: For the Canes, their last bowl game was a 37-34 loss to Oklahoma State in the 2020 Cheez-It Bowl. For The State University of New Jersey, their last bowl game was 38-10 loss to Wake Forest in the 2021 Gator Bowl.
Announcers: Drew Carter, Rod Gilmore, and Taylor Davis

5:45: North Carolina State vs. Kansas State (Pop Tarts Bowl @ Orlando, FL; ESPN): This has the potential to just be one of the most solid games of bowl season. There’s no narratives here. Just two teams that had good seasons and they’re going to go play a football game in Florida (that will feature a supposedly edible mascot, to boot). Ultimately I think K-State’s brand of smash mouth football will see them through, but this could be fun along the way.
SP+ line: K-State -6
Vegas line: K-State -3
Watchability tier: III
Previous meetings: This is the first meeting between these teams.
Last bowl game: This should be NCSU’s fourth bowl in a row, but their 2021 Holiday Bowl was canceled. Thus, their current streak is two. They lost last season’s Mayo Bowl to Maryland, 16-12. This is K-State’s third bowl game in a row, dating to a 42-20 win over LSU in the 2021-22 Texas Bowl. Last season they lost 45-20 to Alabama in the Sugar Bowl.
Announcers: Anish Shroff, Andre Ware, and Paul Carcaterra

9:15: Oklahoma vs. Arizona (Alamo Bowl @ San Antonio, TX; ESPN): I like the Sooners here, but that’s not say this isn’t going to be interesting. There’s a ton of ways this could go. Hopefully, the possibilities remain in the middle of keeping it interesting. I have the Sooners as a slight favorite, but as stated I won’t be surprised by anything that happens in the Alamodome.
SP+ line: Sooners -4.3
Vegas line: Wildcats -3
Watchability tier: IV
Previous meetings: Just two: a regular season home-and-home in 1988 and 1989. The Sooners won the first one 28-10, but lost the second 6-3.
Last bowl game: The Sooners are owners of the second longest active bowl streak, at 25 in a row. The streak started with a 27-25 loss to Ole Miss in the 1999 Independence Bowl. Last season, they lost 35-32 to Florida State in the Cheez-It Bowl. For Zona, this is their first bowl game since a 38-35 loss to Purdue in the 2017 Foster Farms Bowl.
Announcers: Tom Hart, Jordan Rodgers, and Cole Cubelic

Friday, December 29

12:00: Clemson vs. Kentucky (Gator Bowl @ Jacksonville, FL; ESPN): Let’s roll right into Friday, mostly because that gives me more time to write up the New Year’s Six bowl games. At any rate, this was a weird year for both teams. Clemson though comes in as the team that got better as the year went on, while Kentucky slid… and then beat Louisville out of nowhere on Rivalry Saturday. I slightly like the Tigers here.
SP+ line: Tigers -1.7
Vegas line: Tigers -4.5
Watchability tier: II
Previous meetings: Thirteen previous meetings, with the last three in bowl games. The first, however, was a 19-6 Kentucky win in 1925. The most recent was a 21-13 Clemson win in the 2009 Music City Bowl. The Wildcats have an 8-5 overall lead in the series.
Last bowl game: This will be Clemson’s 19th bowl game in a row, dating to the 2005 Champs Sports Bowl, a 19-10 win over Colorado. As I’ve probably noted often, they could have a 25 game streak dating to the 1999 Peach Bowl, but they didn’t make a game after going 6-5 in 2004. Last season, they lost 31-14 to Tennessee in the Orange Bowl. Kentucky has an eight game streak dating to their 33-18 loss to Georgia Tech in the 2016 TaxSlayer Bowl. Lats season they were blanked 21-0 by Iowa in the Music City Bowl.
Announcers: Wes Durham, Tim Hasselbeck, and Taylor Tannebaum

2:00: Notre Dame vs. Oregon State (Sun Bowl @ El Paso, TX; CBS): Y’all this could be fun. For starters, the Sun Bowl is just such a weird and unique game anyway. Next, “fun” isn’t often a word associated with one of the most staid brands in the sport, but this Notre Dame team can move the ball and will probably let the Beavers hang around. Which is also good, because Oregon State has been fun to watch all season and while the future is full of uncertainty, this should be a rewarding game for them to cap off a good season.
SP+ line: Domers -4.4
Vegas line: Domers -6.5
Watchability tier: IV
Previous meetings: Two, and just in bowl games. The Beavers won 41-9 in the 2000-01 Fiesta Bowl, and also won the follow-on game 38-21 in the 2004 Insight Bowl.
Last bowl game: This is the seventh bowl game in a row for Notre Dame, dating to a 21-17 win over LSU in the 2017-18 Citrus Bowl. Last season they beat South Carolina 45-38 in the Gator Bowl. For the Beavers, this is their third in a row, with a 24-13 loss to Utah State in the 2021 LA Bowl and a 30-3 win over Florida in last season’s Las Vegas Bowl.
Announcers: Brad Nessler, Gary Danielson, and Jenny Dell

3:30: Iowa State vs. Memphis (Liberty Bowl @ Memphis, TN; ESPN): If not for West Virginia, Iowa State would be the team we’d be talking about as saving a coach’s job this season. Memphis is a pretty good team and this will effectively be a home game for them, but I just like Iowa State here.
SP+ line: Clones -5.8
Vegas line: Clones -8.5
Watchability tier: II
Previous meetings: This game might seem kind of familiar, as the Cyclones beat the Tigers 21-10 in the 2017… Liberty Bowl.
Last bowl game: The ‘Clones last made a bowl in 2021, where they lost 20-13 to Clemson in the Cheez-It Bowl. For Memphis, this is their tenth straight bowl bid, dating to a 55-48 win over BYU in the greatest Miami Beach Bowl ever in 2014. However, I should note their appearance in the 2021 Hawaii Bowl was canceled. Last season they beat Utah State 38-10 in the First Responder Bowl.
Announcers: John Schriffen, Rocky Boiman, and Dawn Davenport

8:00: Missouri vs. Ohio State (Cotton Bowl @ Arlington, TX; ESPN): And finally, a New Year’s Six game. Which sort of means we’re almost done with bowl season y’all. With no bowl games on Sundays, there’s only really two more days after this. At any rate, one of the biggest storylines of the postseason so far has to be that the guy who started every game for Ohio State at quarterback this season, Kyle McCord, is transferring to Syracuse. What isn’t obvious to, well, anyone is who exactly do the Buckeyes have lined up behind him that pushed him out? While transfers will probably be here to stay, I don’t expect many “twelve game starter for the Ohio State freakin’ Buckeys” transfers to be part of the new normal. Either way, the game. Despite the many opt-outs for the Buckeyes, they just simply have depth that all but the top 3-5 teams in the sport lack. They demonstrated that in a similar situation against Utah in the Rose Bowl a few years ago, where a freshman Marvin Harrison, Jr. had his coming out party. It figures history will repeat itself in Jerryworld.
SP+ line: Buckeyes -8.9
Vegas line: Tigers -2.5
Watchability tier: III
Previous meetings: Twelve! And as one might expect, it hasn’t been so good for the Tigers. The Buckeyes won the first matchup 19-0 in 1939 and kept it rolling through the 40’s, though Mizzou did get a 13-13 tie in 1946. Mizzoui’s only win was a 22-21 win in Columbus in 1976. Their most recent game was a 35-14 Ohio State win 1998, giving the Buckeyes and overall 10-1-1 record.
Last bowl game: This is Mizzou’s third bowl in a row. In 2021 they lost 24-22 to Army in the Armed Forces Bowl, and last season they lost 27-17 to Wake Forest in the Gasparilla Bowl. For the Buckeyes, this is their eleventh bowl game in a row, dating to a 40-35 loss to Clemson in the 2013-14 Orange Bowl. Last season, they went wide right and lost 42-41 to Georgia in the Peach Bowl.
Announcers: Dave Pasch, Dusty Dvoracek, and Tom Luginbill

Bowl Games 2023: Simply Having A Wonderful Christmastime

As usual, all times Eastern and all predictions wrong.

Monday, December 18

2:30: Western Kentucky vs. Old Dominion (Bahamas Bowl @ Charlotte, NC; ESPN): So this bowl actually has a different name, since it’s not taking place in the Bahamas. That said, it’s much funnier this way, so I’m sticking with it. This could be an interesting game, but that said I’m hoping my flight has satellite TV so I can watch it. I like the Hilltoppers here.
SP+ line: WKU -8.7
Vegas line: ODU -2.5
Watchability tier: I
Previous meetings: These teams have met seven times as members of Conference USA. The first was during the second year of the Monarchs’ FBS transition in 2014, where the Hilltoppers won 66-51. The last was in 2021, a 43-20 WKU win. WKU leads the overall series 6-1.
Last bowl game: For the Hilltoppers, this is their fifth straight bowl game, dating to the 2019 First Responder Bowl, where they beat Western Michigan 23-20. Last season they beat South Alabama 44-23 in the New Orleans Bowl. For the Monarchs, this is their third ever bowl game. Their last postseason appearance was a 30-17 loss to Tulsa in the 2021 Myrtle Beach Bowl.
Announcers: Dave Neal, Tom Luginbill, and Abby Labar

Tuesday, December 19

9:00: Texas-San Antonio vs. Marshall (Frisco Bowl @ Frisco, TX; ESPN): This figures to more or less be a rout for the Road Runners, but it still may be worth keeping an eye on.
SP+ line: UTSA -12.4
Vegas line: UTSA -10
Watchability tier: II
Previous meetings: The Herd won the first meeting in 2013 34-10, and the last 23-0 in 2018. The Roadrunners got one in between, a 9-7 win in 2017.
Last bowl game: With this game, the Road Runners will have four consecutive postseason appearances, dating to the 2020 First Responder Bowl, where they lost 34-31 to Louisiana. Last season they lost 18-12 to Troy in the Cure Bowl. The Herd are pretty proficient at making bowl games. This will be their seventh appearance in a row, dating to the 2017 New Mexico Bowl, where they beat Colorado State 31-28.
Announcers: Jorge Sedano, Rocky Boiman, and Dawn Davenport

Thursday, December 21

8:00: Syracuse vs. South Florida (Boca Raton Bowl @ Boca Raton, FL; ESPN): Again, this figures to be a scenario where the ‘Cuse can cruise, but also they did fire their coach and this USF side is feisty. I like the Orange, but again, this may be worth keeping an eye on.
SP+ line: Cuse -8.5
Vegas line: Cuse -3
Watchability tier: II
Previous meetings: These teams have met ten times, and you likely wouldn’t guess the overall record. The first meeting was in 2005, a 27-0 USF win, and the most recent was in 2016, a 45-20 USF win. Suffice it to say, the Bulls are 8-2 overall.
Last bowl game: The Orange appeared in last season’s Pinstripe Bowl, losing 28-20 to Minnesota. For the Bulls, it’s been a minute. They were least seen in the postseason losing 38-20 to Marshall in the 2018 Gasparilla Bowl.
Announcers: Matt Barrie, Dan Mullen, and Harry Lyles Jr.

Friday, December 22

6:30: Georgia Tech vs. Central Florida (Gasparilla Bowl @ Tampa, FL; ESPN): It doesn’t seem like I’ll be able to make it to Tampa for this one. That said, I think this will be an interesting game for neutrals. Overall, I’m just thrilled to be playing again in December, and while the bowl page shows a pick for this game, it’s been a while since I had to point out that mostly I don’t pick Tech games.
SP+ line: UCF -5.8
Vegas line: UCF -4.5
Watchability tier: IV
Previous meetings: The Jackets have a 3-2 overall lead on the Knights. They won the first meeting in 1996 27-20, but lost last season 27-10.
Last bowl game: We haven’t appeared in a bowl game since Paul Johnson’s last season (which says a lot about why the last guy got canned), where we lost 34-10 to Minnesota in the Quick Lane Bowl. This will be UCF’s eighth straight bowl game, dating to the 2016 Cure Bowl, a 31-13 loss to Arkansas State. Last season they lost 30-13 to Duke in the Military Bowl.
Announcers: Wes Durham, Tim Hasselbeck, and Taylor Tannebaum

Saturday, December 23

Noon:

  • Northern Illinois vs. Arkansas State (Camellia Bowl @ Montgomery, AL; ESPN): I honestly can’t think of anything to say about this game other than hoping that NIU’s mascot will get some time on the screen.
    SP+ line: NIU -0.8
    Vegas line: ArkySt -1
    Watchability tier: I
Previous meetings: The first was a 35-0 NIU victory in 1990, the most recent was a 38-20 NIU win in the 2011-12 godaddy.com Bowl. The Huskies lead the overall series 7-1.
Last bowl game: NIU’s last bowl game was the 2021 Cure Bowl, a 47-41 loss to Coastal Carolina. Arkansas State is also ending a drought, as they last tasted the postseason in the 2019 Camellia Bowl, a 34-26 win over FIU.
Announcers: Courtney Lyle, Hutson Mason, and Ashley Stroehlein
  • Duke vs. Troy (Birmingham Bowl @ Birmingham, AL; ABC): It definitely seems like Mike Elko got out at the right time, because while achieving any consistent football success at Duke is worthy of praise, they definitely seem to be on the decline. I think a loss to Troy will cemete that.
    SP+ line: Troy -0.9
    Vegas line: Troy -7.5
    Watchability tier: II
Previous meetings: Just two, a home-and-home from 2013 and 2014. Duke won both times, 38-31 and 34-17, respectively.
Last bowl game: Duke beat UCF in last season’s Military Bowl, 30-13. Troy beat UTSA 18-12 in last season’s Cure Bowl.
Announcers: Tom Hart, Cole Cubelic, and Taylor Davis

3:30:

  • Air Force vs. James Madison (Armed Forces Bowl @ Fort Worth, TX; ABC): It’s still baffling what happened to Air Force, and this could well be a game where JMU goes up big early and just cruises the rest of the way.
    SP+ line: Dukes -8.1
    Vegas line: Dukes -3
    Watchability tier: II
Previous meetings: This is the first meeting between these teams.
Last bowl game: The Falcons have a three game streak going, dating to the 2021 First Responder Bowl, a 31-28 win over Louisville. They beat Baylor 30-15 in last season’s edition of this game. And for JMU, this is their first ever bowl game.
Announcers: Anish Shroff, Andre Ware, and Paul Carcaterra
  • Utah State vs. Georgia State (Potato Bowl @ Boise, ID; ESPN): On the blue turf, we’ve got a couple of teams meeting for the first time. That said, the Aggies seem to be a better team on paper and by the eye test, and I like them here.
    SP+ line: Aggies -0.8
    Vegas line: Aggies -1
    Watchability tier: I
Previous meetings: This is the first meeting between these teams.
Last bowl game: The Aggies have made three straight bowl games, dating to the 2021 LA Bowl, a 24-13 win over Oregon State. Last season they lost 38-10 to Memphis in the First Responder Bowl. For the Panters, they missed a bowl last year, so their last appearance was a 51-20 romp over Ball State in the 2021 Camellia Bowl.
Announcers: Chris Cotter, Mark Herzlich, and Morgan Uber

7:00: Eastern Michigan vs. South Alabama (68 Ventures Bowl @ Mobile, AL; ESPN): It’s hard to have much analysis of this game other than “it’s amazing that EMU is here, and that USA will probably pave them over”.
SP+ line: USA -12.6
Vegas line: USA -16
Watchability tier: I
Previous meetings: This is the first meeting between these teams.
Last bowl game: EMU has now made three straight bowl games, which considering EMU’s history is amazing and tends to make one wonder why Chris Creighton hasn’t gotten the call to a better job yet. At any rate, the 2021 game was a 56-20 loss to Liberty in the Lendingtree Bowl, and last season they beat San Jose State 41-27 in the Potato Bowl. South Al meanwhile lost 44-23 to Western Kentucky in last year’s New Orleans Bowl.
Announcers: Taylor Zarzour, Matt Stinchcomb, Alyssa Lang

7:30: Utah vs. Northwestern (Las Vegas Bowl @ Paradise, NV; ABC): The Utes draw a Big Ten team once again, and once again they’re favored even despite any evidence they can actually score points. Tune into this one if you like defensive football, because while I think the Utes will win, them scoring a bunch seems unlikely.
SP+ line: Utah -9.8
Vegas line: Utah -7
Watchability tier: II
Previous meetings: Three very spread out meetings. The first was a 13-6 Northwestern win in 1927. 54 years later, Utah won 42-0. Finally, they met in the 2018 Holiday Bowl, where the Cats won 31-20.
Last bowl game: The Utes should probably have 9 bowl games in a row, but they didn’t go bowling in 2020 for hopefully obvious reasons. That said, I still think it’s fair to count their streak going back to the 2014 Royal Purple Bowl, where they beat Colorado State 45-10. Last season they lost 35-21 to Penn State in the Rose Bowl. Unlike the Utes, Northwestern’s last bowl appearance was in the 2020-21 season, where they beat Auburn 35-19 in the Citrus Bowl.
Announcers: Sean McDonough, Greg McElroy, and Stormy Buonantony

10:30: San Jose State vs. Coastal Carolina (Hawaii Bowl @ Honolulu, HI; ESPN): Unfortunately, this isn’t a Christmas Eve Hawaii Bowl because the 24th is a Sunday. That said, take some time to appreciate your family (though I understand if you can’t) and maybe also that the weather in Hawaii is almost certainly better than where-ever you’re reading this from. Happy Holidays y’all. Also, I like the Silicon Valley Spartans here.
SP+ line: SJSU -1
Vegas line: SJSU -10
Watchability tier: I
Previous meetings: This is the first meeting between these teams.
Last bowl game: The Spartans lost last year’s Potato Bowl 41-27. This will be the fourth straight bowl game for the Beach Chickens, dating to the 2020 Cure Bowl where they lost 37-34 to Liberty. Last season they lsot the Birmingham Bowl 53-29 to East Carolina.
Announcers: John Schriffen, Orlando Franklin, and Marilyn Payne

Bowl Games 2023: Opening Slate

It’s that time again, and unlike last season we’ve got a full day of football tomorrow.

A few notes:

  • The bowl tracker page will be updated soon.
  • The Watchability Tiers are defined here.
  • I forgot what the third thing was, maybe I’ll remember before I finish this post.

As usual, all times Eastern and all predictions wrong.

Saturday, December 16

11:00: Ohio vs. Georgia Southern (Myrtle Beach Bowl @ Conway, SC; ESPN): The shine is completely off the Clay Helton thing, and I’m not sure this game will be able to do a lot to put it back on.
SP+ line: Ohio -2.2
Vegas line: GaSo -3.5
Watchability tier: II
Previous meetings: This is the first meeting between these teams.
Last bowl game: The Bobcats won last season’s Arizona Bowl over Wyoming, 30-27. Georgia Southern lost last year’s Camellia Bowl 23-21 to Buffalo.
Announcers: Drew Carter, Dustin Fox, and Stormy Buonantony

2:15: Louisiana vs. Jacksonville State (New Orleans Bowl @ New Orleans, LA; ESPN): This game could well be pretty fun. The Cajuns tend to fill the Superdome when they go to New Orleans (hence why they’re here). And remember Rich Rodriguez? Yep, he’s Jax State’s head coach. Expect some points in this one, and just for fun I’ll go with the Gamecocks.
SP+ line: Cajuns -1
Vegas line: JSU -3.5
Watchability tier: II
Previous meetings: This is the first FBS-level meeting between these teams, though amusingly the Ragin’ Cajuns did lose to a DI-AA Jacksonville State 28-14 in 2000.
Last bowl game: For the Cajuns, this is their sixth consecutive bowl game, going back to the 2018 Cure Bowl, where they lost 41-24 to Tulane. Last season they lost 23-16 to Houston in the Independence Bowl. For Jax State, this is their first ever bowl game.
Announcers: Anish Shroff, Andre Ware, and Taylor Davis

3:30: Appalachian State vs. Miami (Cure Bowl @ Orlando, FL; ABC):

Well it’s opening time down on fascination street
So let’s cut the conversation and get out for a bit
Because I feel it all fading and paling and I’m begging
To drag you down with me to kick the last nail in

Yeah I like you in that like I like you to scream
But if you open your mouth then I can’t be responsible
For quite what goes in or to care what comes out
So just pull on your hair just pull on your pout

And let’s move to the beat like we know that’s it’s over
If you slip going under slip over my shoulder
So just pull on your face just pull on your feet
And let’s hit opening time down on fascination street

So pull on your hair pull on your pout
Cut the conversation just open your mouth
Pull on your face pull on your feet
And let’s hit opening time down on fascination street

I like App here.
SP+ line: Miami -0.7
Vegas line: App -5.5
Watchability tier: II
Previous meetings: This is the first meeting between these teams.
Last bowl game: App last appeared in a bowl game back in the 2021 Boca Raton Bowl, where they lost 59-38 to Western Kentucky. (They did go 6-6 last season but didn’t bowl.) Miami only played three games in 2020 for hopefully obvious reasons, but they did go to the 2019-20 Mobile Alabama Bowl where they lost 27-17 to Louisiana. They lost last year’s Bahamas Bowl to UAB, 24-20.
Announcers: Bob Wischusen, Robert Griffin III, and Kris Budden

5:45: New Mexico State vs. Fresno State (New Mexico Bowl @ Albuquerque, NM; ESPN): I still don’t entirely know what happened to Fresno this year, but it’s sort of moot now because like most folks who are way too online I am all about the Aggies. As noted below, NMSU isn’t exactly a… consistently successful program, let’s put it that way. But a 10-win season out of nowhere, a second win a row over Hugh Freeze (this time AT Auburn!) and of course this season’s Bradlee Van Pelt winner in quarterback/runaway beer truck Diego Pavia make them very easy to root for.
SP+ line: Aggies -0.6
Vegas line: Aggies -3.5
Watchability tier: III
Previous meetings: With occasional times in the same conference, these teams have met 19 times. Their first meeting was a 49-17 Fresno win in 1972, and the msot recent was a 30-17 Fresno win in 2019. In fact, the only win for NMSU in the entire series was a 48-45 win in 2011, giving the Bulldogs an overall 18-1 advantage.
Last bowl game: The Aggies have only gone to 5 bowl games ever, and for the first time since 1959 and 1960 they’re going bowling in consecutive seasons. They beat Bowling Green in last season’s Quick Lane Bowl 24-19. This will be the third straight bowl game for the Bulldogs, dating to a 31-24 over UTEP in the 2021 New Mexico Bowl, and last season they pipped Wazzu in the LA Bowl, 29-6.
Announcers: Clay Matvick, Rod Gilmore, and Lauren Sisler

7:30: California-Los Angeles vs. Boise State (LA Bowl @ Inglewood, CA; ABC): The main thing I know about this one is all the Gronk commercials that will be shown during it will be exhausting. Outside of that, yeah probably UCLA but y’all the vibes are BAD. More specifically, while UCLA did beat USC they didn’t really even bother to show up after that against Cal, widely leading most to assume that it was probably time to move on from Chip Kelly. And then… nothing happened. Boise, meanwhile, fired their coach and then went out and won the Mountain West. So in the “who wants it more” department, which matters a lot in bowl games, it’s Broncos all the way here.
SP+ line: UCLA -0.5
Vegas line: UCLA -3.5
Watchability tier: III
Previous meetings: Just one: a 38-7 UCLA win in 1999.
Last bowl game: UCLA lost last season’s Sun Bowl 37-35 to Pitt. The Broncos, meanwhile, should by all rights have a bowl streak dating to 1998, which is amazing considering they’ve only been playing DI-A/FBS football since 1996. They didn’t go bowling in 1998 despite being 6-5, but the next year they won the then-Humanitarian Bowl 34-31 over Louisville. At 8-4 in 2001 they were left out again, but reeled off a streak that lasted until 2018. That game did kickoff, but with about 5 minutes left in the first quarter a thunderstorm moved in and didn’t move much afterward, and the game was called after a two hour delay. In 2020 Boise went 5-2, but, well, you know. And in 2021 they were set to play in the Arizona Bowl, but a COVID outbreak on the team led to the game getting scrapped. So because of all of that, Boise’s bowl streak is now at… two. They beat North Texas 35-32 in last season’s Frisco Bowl.
Announcers: Dave Flemming, Brock Osweiler, and Kayla Burton

9:15: Texas Tech vs. California (Independence Bowl @ Shreveport, LA; ESPN): “Shreveport After Dark” sounds like something from a campy slasher film, but that’s we’ve got here: two teams no one has any idea what to do with. This game will be somewhere between “unwatchable” and “team driving with less than a minute left down 62-60”. Well, maybe not so much the latter (I’m not sure Cal can score 60 even if there’s not a defense on the field) but that’s the gist of how I feel about this one. I’ll probably go with the Red Raiders but this one is a total coin flip.
SP+ line: TTU -2.6
Vegas line: TTU -2.5
Watchability tier: II
Previous meetings: Just one: a 45-31 Texas Tech win in the 2004 Holiday Bowl.
Last bowl game: This is the third straight bowl game for the Red Raiders, who beat Miss State 34-7 in the 2021 Liberty Bowl and Ole Miss 45-24 last season in the Texas Bowl. Unfortunately for them, this year their opponent is Cal. Speaking of the Bears, this is their first bowl game since the now-defunct semi-hometown Redbox Bowl, where they beat Illinois 35-20.
Announcers: Kevin Connors, Rocky Boiman, and Marilyn Payne

This Weekend in College Football: Week 15

As usual, all times Eastern and all predictions wrong.

Noon:

  • Villanova @ South Dakota State (NCAA Division I Quaterfinals; ESPN)
  • Lenoir-Rhyme @ Hardin (NCAA Division II Semifinals; ESPN+)
  • Courtland @ Randolph-Macon (NCAA Division III Semifnals; ESPN+)

2:30: North Dakota State @ South Dakota (NCAA Division I Quaterfinals; ABC)

3:00: Navy vs. Army (@Foxborough, MA; CBS): In a somewhat unexpected development, the Commander-in-Chief’s Trophy is on the line in this game. I say this because most of this season made it look as though it would be Air Force’s for the taking, which is about when Army rolled into Colorado Springs and completely disrupted everything and/or the Falcons forgot how to hold on to the ball. Either way, if Army wins they get the CiC Trophy, and if Navy wins it’s split. I like Army in this contest, though I do have some concerns that sort of go either way.

3:30:

  • Kutztown @ Colorado School of Mines (NCAA Division II Semifinals; ESPN+)
  • North Central @ Wartburg (NCAA Division III Semifinals; ESPN+)

10:00: Albany @ Idaho (NCAA Division I Quarterfinals; ESPN+)

This Weekend in College Football: Week 14

As usual, all times Eastern and all predictions wrong.

Friday

7:00: New Mexico State @ Liberty (Conference USA Championship; CBSSN): I suspect Liberty will win, but that won’t stop me from pulling hard for the Aggies here. And if the Aggies do pull it off, Jerry Kill should merit some serious Coach of the Year consideration.

8:00: Washington vs. Oregon (Pacific 12 Championship @ Las Vegas, NV; ABC): There’s still a chance I may just up and off out to Vegas today because this game is not only the last ever Pac-12 Championship game (at least, as we know it) it should also be an absolute banger of a game. These are two of the best teams in the country in what is functionally a playoff quarterfinal. I am rolling with the conventional wisdom and predicting Oregon to win, but it is impossible to discount the Huskies, who seem to have a knack for getting out of close games.

Saturday

Noon:

  • Oklahoma State vs. Texas (Big 12 Championship @ Arlington, TX; ABC): This would be a super bad time for the version of Texas that existed before this season to show up. That said, so far Texas hasn’t really Texas’d this season, and there’s not any reason to think they’ll start now.
  • Toledo vs. Miami (Mid-American Championship @ Detroit, MI; ESPN): This may secretly be the better game. These are clearly the two best teams in the MAC. Toledo is rightly favored as the Rockets have shaken off their reputation for not being able to win the big game. It should be a good game, though, and may be a refuge if Texas is taking care of business.
  • Youngstown State @ Villanova (NCAA Division I Second Round; ESPN+)
  • Richmond @ State University of New York at Albany (NCAA Division I Second Round; ESPN+)

1:00: Tennessee-Chattanooga @ Furman (NCAA Division I Second Round; ESPN+)

2:00:

  • Mercer @ South Dakota State (NCAA Division I Second Round; ESPN+)
  • Sacramento State @ South Dakota (NCAA Division I Second Round; ESPN+)

3:00: Boise State @ Nevada-Las Vegas (Mountain West Championship; FOX): It’s not often that a team in a conference championship game fired their coach less than a month before said game, but that’s what the Broncos did. It does seem to have some impact, but they’re also here because the computers said they were better than San Jose State, which is the tiebreaker the Mountain West had to go with because none of the the three teams played the other. That said, it’s been a heckuva year for the Runnin’ Rebels and I don’t see it stopping here.

4:00:

  • Southern Methodist @ Tulane (American Championship; ABC): SMU got better as the year went on, but Tulane just figures to still be the class of the conference.
  • Georgia vs. Alabama (Southeastern Championship @ Atlanta, GA; CBS): Both of these teams kinda seemed to take it easy in their rivalry games. That put the Tide in real danger that took converting what might become the most famous “4th and goal from the 31” play in history. And while I’m not complaining, the Bulldogs looked pretty one-dimensional against us as they opted to rest McConkey and Bowers. (That said, when you average seven yards per carry, there’s not any reason to stop doing that.) At any rate, unlike the past couple seasons, Bama doesn’t feel like the team most capable of stopping Georgia: I would say both Michigan and Oregon could beat them. This Bama team isn’t perfect either, though they have figured what they can do with their QB the past few weeks. So, in summary, this Georgia team can get got, and while I don’t think it will happen here, I wouldn’t be surprised either.
  • Appalachian State @ Troy (Sun Belt Championship; ESPN): While JMU obviously deserves to be here, at least App beat them. Troy, though, continues to be Troy: play (relatively) great defense and run the ball. App is just too inconsistent to make me think they have a chance here.
  • Prairie View A&M @ Florida A&M (Southwestern Championship; ESPN2)

6:00: North Dakota State @ Montana State (NCAA Division I Second Round; ESPN+)

8:00:

  • Florida State vs. Louisville (Atlantic Coast Championship @ Charlotte, NC; ABC): You can discount rivalry week or not, but it’s really hard not to think about how those games might carry over to this one. FSU rallied to beat Florida and show that can still work an offense without their best player. Louisville missed a chance to finally show Kentucky who’s boss (indeed, it’s as though Kentucky’s chances of beating the Cardinals is inversely proportional to how good the Cards are that season). Add that to the sort of general “they can’t keep getting away with this!” vibe the Cardinals have been doing all season, and it’s hard to see how FSU doesn’t win this.
  • Iowa vs. Michigan (Big Ten Championship @ Indianapolis, IN; FOX): It’s very difficult to see how this will be any different from the 2021 version of this game that the Wolverines won 42-3.

9:00: Delaware @ Montana (NCAA Division I Second Round; ESPN+)

10:00: Southern Illinois @ Idaho (NCAA Division I Second Round; ESPN+)
